He obtained his MS from the University of Gdańsk in 1987,〔(Wiesław Masłowski CV )〕 and his PhD from the University of Alaska, Fairbanks in 1994 with a dissertation entitled "Numerical modeling study of the circulation of the Greenland Sea".〔(Numerical modeling study of the circulation of the Greenland Sea )〕 He became well known in 2007 for stating that the Arctic Ocean might be nearly ice free in the summer as early as 2013, based on projection of the declining ice volume trend.
